104 Chapter 10

    Troops advance on Modocs April 14teenth hard battles for three days
    Indians vacated their caves night of May 9th 1873
    Indians show good marksmanship first three days of fighting

the Troops did not advance on the Indians till the third day after the massacree. they were mett by their foe about half a mile from the strong hold. the first Volley fired was by the Indians who way laying for the Soldiers. Seven or eight soldiers was killd at the first Volley. every man was hit in the head. in the first three days of fighting every Solder Hirt was killd. not one being hit lower then the neck. No Indian was killd in the three days fighting. the Troops withdrew for afew days,. no fighting the soldiers was building Breast works under cover of darkness. after the Breast works were completed the Boys in blue stationed themselves in them. one dark night Just as the sun peeped over the mountains April 22. Some of the Boys in blue saw an old Squaw makeing towards the lake. they fired at her did not hit her She never turnd water was what she wanted. she was chokeing for water. When in Just afew steps from the precesious water she was stoped by an Irish soldier. he took her as prisoner he lead her to his Breast works where his comarades were he made her sit down gave her some water. the old Squaw [word obscured] seemd to be Satisfied untill heavey fireing comenced. the Troops had brouht the canons or motors
