New York June 25, '77 Dear Mother,

   You may be sure yours was very welcome this morning as it contained our first words from home since I left.  But we are saddened indeed to hear off the death of our good friend Hugh Jones.  How much he will be missed by all.  Poor Mrs. Jones.  my heart aches for her!  She knows that with him all is well.  He was a good man, doing faithfully his work at home and in the church, and I am sure to him have been spoken the blessed words "Well done, good and 

in margin: There was a great card there I have bought me a cambric polonais, a parasol fan and white skirt besides a watch chain, stockings &c &c. I do not know what Dr. Houghton will charge. Mary is not feeling very strong, but she is well. I think she has not thin enough dresses - and she has put on her brown silk this P.M.
