On Sunday four of our company (Missourians) got a pass out side of the lines and deserted. Monday afternoon a squad of four men were sent after them. On Wednesday the sutter was discharged for seling whiskey, and a new one appointed, he then treated the regiment to beer Thursday our men returned not successful in finding the deserters but bringing with them something for most of the company, two of the boys received each a large cake from home, some one thing some another with my portion I treated them all and in return got one piece of cake and some apples. The same train brought our company flag with two Alton
