A great battle has just been fought and it is not certain bit in all probability is over at this place it commenced Sunday morning Apl 6th. the attact was made by the Rebels and I think it conciderably surprised our Generals for they pressed right into our camp and very fast. the 11th was out as soon as possible leaving our camp just as it was but the Col ordered the teams to load up what baggage they could and be ready to move back to the river if nessary and [vertical writing] Let Mother and Sister know that I am safe soon as possible [vertical writing end]
