I saw the seven graves of rough riders buried at Las Guasimas killed at the first days fight, The names of the fallen are marked on the wooden slabs which stand in a row. Socks and shoes and hats and coats are strewn over the ground. One of the [ ] who accompanied us found a fine Spanish sword. It is beautifully engraved with the name of possibly some officer of high rank. I stood on the summit of Las Guasimas as I had at San Juan and walked over the palm and jungle grown valleys and the mountains in their blue mist and felt that the Island had been sufficiently baptized in blood to secure its redemption. Both American and Spanish blood, enough to seal a compact of peace, any peace and may it come soon.
