 The "New York Heral" boat salutes

us and is the first to do so.

 I see beyond the slopes of the 

shore mountains and it is said that they are far into the interior the air is so clear that distance is great.

 And, here we see the city (as 

they call it but looking more like a huddled together village out of date) of Santiago on the banks. In the interior I see the theater and the spires of a Church save for that, there is nothing about the place worth much. The houses are built of yellow clay and are unsubstantial looking. The town has the appearance of some ancient community out of the early history of man.
