Image Wheeling, VA, Thursday Evening Apl, 14th 1842 My Dear Wife, I take my pen in hand to inform you that we are all well, and have had a very safe passage, at this time we are about 10 miles below Wheeling, and if nothing happens us, will arrive at that splendid City in about on hour which will be about 10, o'clock __ We will probably remain in Wheeling a short time, and then proceed on our journey towards the fair city of "Smoke and Dust" where our Dear Cousin knows a Gentleman by the name of Smith. __ Mother is well and has enjoyed herself very much since we left home, I have taken interest enough in her wellfare to show her all places of interest as such as are new to her, The Ladies all seem well pleased, at Marietta we stoped a few minutes and all the passengers together with myself went to see the water brake over the dam in the Muskingum River which unites with the Ohio at that point. The weather is very cool and fine for travelling, I have been sorry every since I left, that you were not along, but I expect you will see just as much pleasure
