August 9th

Dear Johnny - yours is received and finds me still on my back and as feeble as ever. My cough is much better, but my breast not - and some days today for instance. I am not able to sit up but very little- until now unclear tomorrow I may be a little better - I cannot ride more than a mile out and have not walked to the corner yet. My appetite is more natural tho not very voracious - but I have taken no medicine at all except something to alleviate the cough which I discontinued after a day's trial - since that I have taken nothing - untill today when Pa prepared me some drops of which I am to take twenty, 4 times a day. I am waiting positively for cooler weather the heat oppresses me sadly - Wm. Harding walked too soon and for the last two weeks has been suffering from an inflammation of the nerves & muscles
