Gallipoli May 18th Dearesgt Johnny - You will be surprised to see the date of my letter. I came very unexpectedly on a very sad errand to bring Mr Vintton - we had not heard of his illness - then it had been telegraphed to us when we saw his death in the papers - on wednesday we received a telegram that Sarah would leave Washington with Mr Vintton's remains, for Gallipolis - so, Charlotte & I decided to meet her in Wheeling and if she were alone to come on - but I finally concluded Mr & Mrs Goddard would be with her & I go back the same evening - but when we reached Wheeling, they were just starting for the boot so Sarah would not let me return so we dropped a line to Pa and came on - Pa has [unclear] his assent from the first - Mr, & Mrs Goddard were in Wheeling with [unclear: Ronny?]. Mr Coombs had been charged with the execution of Mr. Vintton's desires to be brought here - so we had quite a party - under all the circumstances Sarah was much afflicted - she says her father was butchered - he had had a little wart on the end of his nose for about two months
