Has the Nations prayer been answered. Death of Garfield James.5.15_ Tribune Sept 22 Written over the news article The Reign of Law. To the Editor of The Chicago Tribune. Chicago, Sept.21.-Among the many valuable lessons taught by the tragic death of President Garfield, none is so much emphasized, illustrated, and demonstrated as the face that the affairs of this world are shaped and determined by the operation of the immutable and inexorable laws of Nature. The slightest intervention of supernatural power at any moment from the time the villain Guiteau conceived his dastardly purpose until death closed the sad scene would have averted the final catastrophe. All Christendom and millions of other people of different faiths prayed fervently and frequently from the house the fatal shot was fired until death supervened that God would interfere in behalf of this great and good man, with what effect, or rather lack of effect, it is now needless to mention. From thousands of pulpits will now emanate the old Sophistry that :God moves in a mysterious way," etc.; that "every cloud has a silver lining," etc,; in other words, that for some reason which he does not wish to reveal, God has killed President Garfield, just as he did President Lincoln, and that in due time, when we fully understand the matter, we shall be glad of it! We know of no blessing, however, but we do know of an inexpressible amount of suffering caused by the untimely death of Lincoln, and it will be hard to make the people believe that the loss of Garfield was in any way necessary to their prosperity. Such teaching amounts practically to telling the people that the murder of the President, under the circumstances, was the proper thing, and that Guiteau, as the agent and servant of God, did a commendable deed! If the removal of Gen. Garfield was in obedience to the special desire of providence of God, Guiteau may well claim, as he does, that he was inspired to commit the damnable act. Are all murders, atrocities, and catastrophes concocted in heaven? Very different is the aspect of this sad affair to one who recognizes the fact that God rules by immutable laws which are not devised, modified, or suspended from hour to hour, but which are as old as time and as permanent as the universe. "Nothing can be more wonderful than the majestic, unbroken, sublime, and eternal procession of causes and effects." H.D.G.
