3 The terms revival, awakening, and reformation have come to mean the same thing. An unusual measure of the Holy Spirit among the people, beginning at the "house of God." X The lamented Finney says in his "Revival lectures" that a "Revival of religion" presupposes a declension." This is the true and original meaning. It refers to Gods people. A true revival of religion can only take place in hearts where religion exists. That which has no existence cannot be revived. The broader meaning of the term which includes conversion came very naturally into use. Whenever Gods people are revived - that is, get near to God - get their hearts cleansed - made tender - made to see & feel the worth of perishing souls, then conversions inevitably follow.
