15 At another time it tells them that the Bible is a mixed up book - full of mysteries and self contradictions and that the reason, is a far better guide. At all events it succeeded in getting me to stoutly reject their only hope - "Having eyes they see not;" ears but they hear not; hearts but they understand not." Dr Taylor of Norwich, once said to John Newton, "Sir, I have collated every word in the Hebrew scriptures 17 times, and it is very strange that the doctrine of Atonement which you hold has not been found by me." To this Newton replied "I am not at all surprised at this, I once went to light my candle with the extinguisher on it." Now, prejudice from education learning - habit &c often proves an extinguisher.
