[Emily] Warwick Apr 6th 1856 Sunday - Maple Grove
My Dear Sister Abby - I am at mothers today & it is such dreadful bad going the women can't go to meeting - you never saw the like of the traveling - it is fortunate Mary came when she did for she would had to have come on foot as the rest of the passengers did she will have a time of it tomorrow - they think of carrying her to Winchester & then take the Express to Brattleboro &c. I suppose you know she had a week after she got home - I came here Friday Aft. I am going home tonight. Maria & Samuel are here - Charles seems & looks better - he has been to Dr. Pierce again - he calls his disease [crossed out] Larry Glottis [different handwriting] Laryngitis (lar-yn-gi-tis) from 'Larynx' I suppose - in the throat - in Physiology I find 'Larynx' and also 'glottis' - I understood the Dr. to say Laryngitis although first time he called it a Bronchial difficulty - Charles [original handwriting] he gave him medicine that seems to help him - you see the name signifies a throat disease but Charles dreamed he conversed with some learned person & told him all about it & the person in his dream told him his disease was Bronchia Chronica, & I believe it is just exactly the truth of the case, the Dr. says there is no consumption about it & his lungs are sound - but that
[written along the top of the page] I guess better get about 4 yds. trimming for my dress
[written along the left-hand side of the page in the second handwriting] Abby I just thought I would [too Rolony?] this page - Emily did not quite understand & made a mistake About the name of the disease I have looked in Phisiology & read about Larynx - Laryngitis and think the section is about right I think I have been too much in the habit of viewing it tight neck, hkf, not being in a room when there is a storm, and also my singing & trouble &c is all but for this compounds I want a cheerful [most?] and good air and be careful about singing with a tight cravat
