La Fayette Jan 7th 1857 Dear Brother Nathan

                             Yours was Rec'd Yesterday at the time of it arrived I was at the farm and so to the time I Expect they use us all hard.. I have been in tight places all the fall.. But notwithstanding the time if I could have been situated so as to have managed my own Business Both on farm in Store & making collection outside the times would not have been felt by me as they are now. I owe some three thousand dollars But have plenty to pay with in Shape of Personal property or Good notes But find they are not many But am not affraid But I Shall worrie though. After, a Sort I have 42 Head of five Cattle 10 Head of Horses Rest Hogs Wheat Barley & co. Shall have 4000 Bushel Prime corn beside Enough to Winter my Sock & six or seven thousand Dolls of notes & of @ which if I could collect one half or more My Stock in Sore is Some Twelve or fourteen Hundred Dollars.. As for Yourself I have been Sorry Ever since I heard You were connected with the Sawmill You could not have
