home. I commenced life poor & with poor health & yet God's providence had provided for me a better home than I saw provided for very many of my companions who commenced life with good health with me. I thanked God for it & loved it as it seemed to me the best possible home under existing circumstances I could have, yet I felt then as I always have felt that it was my duty to look around & prepare myself to take advantage of any opening that might occur which would lead to something higher. It seemed to me that in a few years we could by taking the right course be numbered among the first men & women of that part of the country & for this reason I wanted a study that I might spend a part of each day in preparing myself for any opportunity that providence might throw in my way.
