on my Blennerhasset Farm - four miles from this place where we live - and destroyed property in buildings, machinery & crop to the amount of about £1200 -(six thousand dollars) The fire was due to searching for an escape of gas in the farm building with a lighted candle & finding it! The property was not insured. Numbers of people were on the spot soon after the fire broke out - it broke out about 7:45 P.M. - our great double 12 inch diameter pumps used for pumping liquid manure were got to work as soon as possible; & there was plenty of water, but the fire had got a great hold in a wonderfully short time & it raged for several hours. Part of the buildings were pulled down to save the rest. Many of the people worked admirably, among falling slates timber &c. but no life was lost; & no person seriously hurt. I am glad we are able to bear the loss without having to suffer anything like poverty on account of it.
