Dear Brother Nathan,

Do not think I was not glad to hear from you and yours because your good letter has remained so long unanswered. If you were only where I could get to you easily I would see you and enjoy your company pretty often I assure you, but Oh! dear this letter writing why, I am getting so that I really dread the mental effort of writing to my dearest friends. If I could write you as easily and often as I can and do think of you you would have as many letters as you would wish to read I think. How the cares, economies and labors of a family and of society unfit one for intellectual life and application! At any rate this is the case with me.
