729 N. McLean Lincoln, IL 62656 May 10, 1974 Dear Jack,

I'd be delighted to become the sage of Lincoln. But as my father said of William Maxwell

when I asked him why Maxwell has not been honored as a writer in his hometown: (quote) "He's been gone a long time." (unquote) I also was gone a long time and I'm afraid no-one knows, or cares, that I'm back.
