mal normal, continuation of previous page working conditions and would have traded every hope of the bonus for a steady job. They looked you straight in the eye, sun burned, weary, almost hopeless men, + I couldn't forget it was their young bodies that at one time was all that stood between us and stark tradgedy. They didn't go to war, they were sent to war, and not in a score of lives will I forget that I saw them routed out of their poor, make shift shelters with the flag flying atop, + everything go up in smoke. I hold no brief for the bonus, its many ramifications are beyond me–what I contend is that there are degrees of intelligence and in this case those with superior endowment faced in the duty to their brother man, and it was a disgraceful affair. I did not mean to write at such length. I hope you will always remain kindly interested in them for they are not out of the woods yet. Sincerely Mary Lloyd Willis
