Mr. Sherwood Anderson -

I have written to you before. Ordinary letters - asking for advice and such things. Once I even sent you some short stories and you were kind enough to read them. That was some time ago. Since then I have written better stuff and am somewhat ashamed of what I sent to you. I am a little better now, am getting some encouragement from people, from editors.

This letter is a little different. It scared me, just to think of writing it. But why should I be afraid?

I have been afraid too many times and now I will quit it.

Recently I read your article in "Today" magazine. I don't care for the magazine much, it's policy. It's like somebody trying to hold something up that's creaking pretty bad.

Of course, I read your books before this, nearly all of them (except this Mid-American Chants).
