March 20, 1925 Dear Bab, I have had a strange? unclear of session? with poor little Bob this morning. What a muddled little boy-half man. The problem with such a boy is his over? smartness? - shall I say slickness. I feel the whole matter deeply because in some odd way I am responsible and do not want to shirk the responsibility. On the one hand is a rather slick quick boyish way of being nice to people and then always it comes out that he is being nice for a purpose of his own. I have never quite seen anyone with so much assurance of self - so much self assurance with nothing to stand on. unclear his whole nature unclear for affection. What has driven? him so deeply into himself. One knows instinctively that he could so easily become a hard slick rather blind man of the world. The problem for such a boy is of course double hard.
