I had a brief note fro, M. Fabre - I sent him the review of his book and he said there was a better one in the New York Times Book Review, which I read in liberry - Fabre seemed to think the an- thology would be used as textbook in colleges, of course that is no great sales boost.

Heard Gore Vidal on Martin Agronsky's show and Vidal sounded a bit like Ezra Pound in his criticism of our system of Government - altho Vidal seemed to lean more towards socialism - he practically called Nixon and the Republicans halfwits and said J. F. Kennedy was attractive but accomplished nothing as a President. Which is of course true - Vidal said we couldnt have a democracy or a republic and at the same time have an American Empire, which is what Scott Nearing said years ago in 1921, in his book The American Empire, which same I still have.

I just read Cowley's last book, THE SECOND FLOWERING and enjoyed it - of the so-called liberals I find Cowley the least objectionable - he dedicated his book to Allen Tate, whom I always considered a bewildered and largely off-the-track Southerner., an Agrarian wasnt he or something like - fail to see what Tate and Cowley have in common ? I've had dry hacking cough for several weeks but have Dr's appointment for regular checkup tomorrow - he is of THE OLD SCHOOL, worries about my cholesterol rate, which is high on account I dont take the anti-cholesterol pills he prescribed. His lab technician said: Oh dont worry about it unless it gets to about 1000, then you can start worrying. I think it went from 50 to 350. Hope you have fun in Chicago - still remember the few times I was there and you showed me round and I believe we saw Ed Nyquist and a Quaker gal, Edie Lentz.
