Sept. 24, 1914. Dearest Mum: I baked a devil's food cake yesterday morning and in the afternoon went over to Independence Park, taking Mrs. Wilson with me. I found the gym class in session when I got there so decided to go in swimming. I had brought Max's suit with me, so went to the locker rooms, got into the suit, put on a cap that the supervisor loaned me (I had forgotten my own) and got under the shower. The matron handed me a cake of soap and said that I was expected to wash my feet. I was somewhat surprised as my feet were not dirty, but found that they make everybody do that so as to keep the tank clean. The water felt pretty cold (that is, in the tank, the shower is warmer) but I had a good swim nevertheless. Mrs. Wilson stood at the side of the tank and watched.
