3 There is something bigger than art there - it is what Whitman had - unclear, if you only could believe it. He felt it about workers & peasants however - narrowed himself for a world purpose. My only criticism of work like yours & Joyce & Dreiser is perhaps a non-artistic one. I simply could not live if I thought people would always be thwarted in these ways. I want to know that life is not to be a permanent crucifixion of artest to humanity & I look abroad & find millions of people who say it shall not be & who fight & work for a freer, gayer world & who are now building it in little corners of the earth. I can't help joining them & trying to share their wisdom & courage. Maybe this is bad for one's hopes as a writer. With good wishes to you & Mrs. Anderson.
