This letter is the outcome of a long-felt desire to write to you about your work. Possibly I am
unknown to you, even by name; certainly I do not suppose you could possibly like my work. But ever since I read in New York last summer your "Winesburg" (I tried to get in touch with you, but failed through not having your address), and now even more since I have read "Poor White", I realize you are a big man, a man such as America needs.
