everywhere than ^ other people. The reason is, of course, that they know how to cook a meal, be polite when politeness is due, & considering the limited range of the human mind, like that of the dog or horse, naturally are ascending with few delusions, having been at the bottom in the south so long & the world over could not move but one way. I don't believe there is any solution for it, except a natural series of revolutions & wars reducing all to a most wholesome state of poverty & necessity for effort physically when money is not thought of. I am unfortunately old enough to remember a period of 20 years when we boys in our town used to take a fiendish delight in contemning [sic] a few saloon keepers and coal-mine owners for their wealth & considering ourselves much superior, though they were worth less than darkies now & lived worse. There is no solution, man being an animal, civilized only for a brief time on account of his freedom of action, as compared to plants and animals which are kept under destructive control & are really monstrosities - I mean the ones we control - the fight, having capacity to sink & rise again naturally if not fed too long or starved too long, & maybe even then.
