is on wobbly legs. How do you account for these facts? Is TV responsible, or is everybody reading only Life, Time, Newsweek, the U.S. News, and the Readers Digest?
Did you ever know John T. Frederick, who used to review for the Chicago Sun? I believe that he lives in retirement near Iowa City, Iowa. He taught at Iowa years ago when I was beginning my graduate work there. He reviewed my little book on Emerson, Sheltering Tree, and said that I wrote abominably! Well, peace be with him.
I am interested to know that you "referee" a course in creative writing at Columbia College. I like your word. As the University of Iowa, where I taught from 1928 until 1947, creative writing is quite a going concern, or was, at least, during my last years there. At that time, as I remember it, more advanced degrees were being given in creative writing than in either American or in English literature, English literature trailing the other two fields. Perhaps you know Paul Engle, the director, who used to review for the Chicago Tribune, and may still do for all I know.
