531 Main Street Rivercross N 1014 Roosevelt Island New York 10044 September 18, 1980 Dear Jack,

Your last letter, sometime last spring, was written when you had just recovered from a severe illness.
I do hope that you are on your feet, and that Gladys is much improved.
We have just returned from California, where we spent several weeks with Joe and his family, and with old friends.
The "literary" situation has not improved one bit, as you know.
I am thinking of writing to James Loughlin of New Directions in the hope that he may crack open the door to a reliable small publishing house.
How are you doing in that respect?
    Write.
    Our warmest regards to Gladys

Sincerely, Ben
