451 Wrightwood Chicago, Illinois August 9, 1943 My Dear Mr. Conroy,

     I called directly I got home tonight to tell you how much I appreciated your criticism and your very generous and completely unnecessary, gesture in giving it to me free.  Everything may I say is true, of course, and I am extremely glad to have your opinion.
    Honestly, I consider you an unusually well balanced critic.  I have been reading what you say in the Sun rather regularly and have come to that conclusion.  (This is a compliment.  I do not admire many critics.)
    Now may I criticize underlined:  you - gratis?   From the vantage point of BA in English (with honors) from U of C  1927.  MA in English Northwestern 1937 maybe
