were & to which the apostle referred consisted in their outward & inward troubles & afflictions- & concerning this night he observed that it was far spent (i.e.) it was brought nearly to a close- it was near break of day- when these outward distresses which they endured from their persecutors would cease & the church would enjoy a season of peace & prosperity- & further, death was now nearer than when they believed: in which they would be delivered from all their internal conflicts with sin, & experience the full glory of Him in their eternal state; this day was at hand- This was the argument which he made use of to urge his brethren to cast off the work[s] of darkness & put on the armour of light.
