Provincetown Mass Dear Jack Conroy
I've just read your Disinherited. It's a fine piece of work I didn't like your language in the narrative part so well, but when you are putting down what your people say, you put it down straight and salty - so darn few people writing have any feeling for the old English language as we speak it in these parts. the whole thing seemed to me an absolutely solid unfaked piece of crossed out: work narrative, as good as the best of Jack London, and that in my opinion, is saying a great deal. Congratulations
Yrs J Dos Passos
For god's sake dont let them make a literary gent out of you. A stuffed shirt is just as much stuffed if its colored red or white. Your writing has so darn much life to it that the shirt stuffing artists are sure to be after you from all seven sides of the fence. (If yr publishers want to use any of the above remarks - let 'em go ahead)
