Dear Jack Conroy - I have heard from Douglas Wixson that you had a Jack Conroy Day Celebration

in Moberly recently and that my old friend William Pedes was there - Bill and I were assistant professors of English together at The University of Maryland during WWII. I also hear that Lawrence Hill & Co has brought out a underline Portable Jack Conroy Reader / underline and that you will have finished your autobiography soon and That Wixson is working on a biography of you. This is all wonderful news & I want to congratulate you on all of this Most well deserved recognition.

I also have heard that Lawrence Hill has published a rather nasty biography of Langston Hughes by Faith

Berry. This was distressful news for me because I have always considered Lang to have been a splendid fellow. I knew him in NYC during the early thirties. I traveled with him from LA through Las Vegas when it was a small cow town to the building of Boulder Dam, the grand Canyon & back to LA; I was in Moscow when Lang was there; when I visited Ezra pound at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in 1950, Langston was there; and I received a good postcard from Lang shortly before he died. I think it a shame that a nasty biography full of unsupported accusations should have been published about him by Lawrence Hill.
