Dec. 12, 1949 Dear Jack: Almost a sixth of a lifetime since I shuffled the time sheets together and made off for Nw York to make good. During that time I worked five commercial jobs; traveled 115,000 miles as sound and radar man on a destroyer; have spent 28 months in four hospitals, was operated on once with three more and 18 more months to come and go.
One way or another we put in our time and are ready for the redeemer whether there is anyone to redeem us or not. Passed through Chicago last February on my way here from Phoenix where I had gone to rest for the Winter. I was slipping fast and only went where I could get fed and rest. Saw several of the boys and girls. Chicago did not depress me, although I feel better around these parts
