[penciled notes in top margin] Xmas 1958 Lamson, Vernon

Dear Jack and Gladys

We so much enjoyed our last visit with you that we hope to make it as soon as we can.
Sorry to hear that this year has been tough for you.
Rita has had it worse than any of the previous 49.
I fell and busted my square Swedish skull in July and wasnt supposed to live

2 but I got through in a couple of months and enjoyed part of my longest vacation Rita had it much harder than I did.

Since then my ulcers, stomach hernia low blood pressure, lost weight etc were harder on her than on me
Then to top things off, she lost her mother a little more than a week ago.

3 It looks like we are now coming out of the woods. We are bloody but not unbowed and as soon as the doctor lets me, I hope we can drink some ale together Our very best Rita & Surde PS If I had drunk enough ale I wouldnt have cracked my skull But one way or another I am going to continue living in this foolish world, sober or otherwise. You do the same.
