Eve before they had eaten of the ^tree of knowledge^ f̶o̶r̶b̶i̶d̶d̶e̶n̶ ̶f̶r̶u̶i̶t̶. Within the last few years it is rare to see a perfectly naked child even among the poorest Indians; every one has some covering, though may be only the most ragged of shirts.
On occasions the children are tricked out with all the elaborate finery that the skill and patient labor of the fond mother can arrive at. Most of these dresses are new? yet made after the patterns handed down from generation to generation. But some are ambitious ^attempts^ of the mother to graft her idea of beauty and fitness on the stiff and ungraceful civilized
