Wednesday, Oct 30th. - The ways of the Lord are indeed mysterious and past finding out. In my unclear troubles of the last month I cried unto Him for help, and prayed that if it was His good pleasure that I should remain in this city for His honor and glory, that He would bring prosperity to the Auction business, or open a way by which I could make a change; and that He would also work upon the heart of her when I love to be more demonstrative toward me than she had been lately; and in both these respects He answered my prayers, directly and instantly; but now trouble has come in another way, and it seems as if I should be obliged to give up business altogether after all, in consequence of my landlord wishing to let the whole building to one party, and my inability to prevent it for the want of the necessary means. I cannot understand it but I have faith to believe that it will result to my good. I had taken these answers to my prayers as an indication of God's blessing upon my business, when He, perhaps, meant them only to teach me my duty as to remaining in New York; and as an injunction not to put my resolution of going west into practice. I cannot believe that my prayers were answered ins o marked a manner simply for the purpose of disappointing me in my expectations; but I fully believe with the Apostle John, that if I obtain not it is because I ask
