It was a very large one and I wish we could follow them, but we must follow the trail the wrong way and return to camp, not having been able to head off the indians as expected. The trail was not over 36 hours old at this point. Just as we were going into camp I shot a very large raccoon, gave him to the men and intend having a piece of him for lunch tomorrow. Oct 4th - Marched 24 miles up the creek following the indian trail all the way - until we came to the Fort Wallace wagon road.
