Sept 2nd Not hearing from Major Howland I reported by letter. Find the inhabitants in quite a scare caused by indian depredations along the Rail-Road. This is why I have been sent here. All the women and children staid in the machine shop two nights and the men still continue to do guard duty at night. Met and had a chat with General Harvey. He is here on duty connected with the removal of "Spotted Tail's" band of Sioux indians to their reservation. He is a very finely preserved old gentleman of the old school - must be 6.4 high, and is a very fine looking and active man yet. Sept 4th Saw Genl Sherman en route from his trip to the mountains. He told "Spotted Tail" in my hearing that he must get out of the country along the Republican as that country would be full of troops within a month and they would not be able to tell the difference between friendly and hostile indians.
