Fort D. A Russell is a fine Post, judging from what I could see on a very short visit. Aug 30th Met Mr Haymond, Mr Burrows & Mr Shirley. Genl. Smith relinquished command of the Regt to Genl. Bradley he being unwell and going home on sick leave. Aug 31st Leave at 10am, for north Platte Co. C Lt McCaullay in same train bound for Plum Creek. Sept 1st Arrive at north Platte and report by telegram to Maj. Howland commanding Ft McPherson & this district. Don't know whether I am to relieve Major Morris and his Co. of the 18th Inf. now here or not. Good barracks and quarters for one Co. and a very complete little Post. in every respect. There is a large R. R Machine shop, several stores, a large hotel and many more shops. Population of some 400 or 500. Mostly R.R. employees.
