Aug 18th We moved early, thus finishing the abandonment of "the Powder River Country". Fired three shells and their explosion made up a salute of six guns. I was not sorry to leave that part of the country, but would just as ? stay at Fort Smith, as any place I ever was stationed. Marched to Dry Fork of Powder River. 17 miles. Aug 19th Marched at 3am, camping on North Cheyenne near Wind River 25 miles. Aug 20th. Camped north of Brown's springs distance 25 miles. Aug 21st Marched 2.55 and arrived at Fort Fetterman about 1 PM distance 28 miles. The weather has been very warm, especially the past two.
