Aug - to the Colonel and there we tried to hold a confab with them but could not understand each other very well. However we learned that they belonged to a large party of Crows that were camped a short way down the river: That they were friendly and wanted papers &c. They were well dressed and the finest looking indians that I have ever seen. They all swam over the river and came up to camp. It was truly amusing to see them crossing the river. They striped and tying their clothes either on their heads or in packs enclosed in a robe they would swim over and bring them out dry. The packs were fastened by a unclear
