June 10. 56. Dear Lorraine,

  Twelve days to go, and still I've heard nothing from the agent, so I guess I can write that off as a missout.   It begins to look like the dawn will come up like thunder on the 23d, so if you can spare any bread, I can make good use of it, staying afloat while I try to find something to do in Jacksonville, since I won't have enough to get me up north.
  I wrote to Dr. A in New York, asking if he had any information on the Paris Review deal, but no answer from that quarter.  There have been a number of wakeful nights, and I would probably be feeling sorry for myself if I wasn't busier than a fox in a box trying to figure out an angle.
  Rather galling, though, to get so hassled up by bread when I was so sure that I'd at last found a direction.  Ah well, it does not yet appear what we shall be.
