Aug 16th Dear Jack:

Its been 12 days since I had Muriel's letter with the news of your great loss. Since then I've been thinking about you and wanting to say something of comfort, yet here I've been sitting with heavy hand, and pen almost imobile [sic], as I know no words with which to soothe or comfort you.
Sad enough this unhappy world without such unnecessary waste and loss. I am so sorry.
I never met your boy Tom but heard from others that he was a fine and sensitive person.
I look upon Harry and often ponder over the complete selflessness of the man and How he lives only for his children. Are all parents like that? If so what a great loss of oneself
