  It was good to get your good luck note.   We continue to survive in spite of economics and institutions.
  From now on, Jack, no more dues from you.  You're officially a "member emeritus" - with all rights and privileges, whatever they are.
  I had hoped to see  you in Chicago last month.  It was a good conference, with a full program.  Young writers seem to feel sorrier for themselves than they ?need - used?    to, though.
   I talked to Doug in Minneapolis, and he caught me up on the news.  I was very sorry to hear about Gladys.  You must miss her terribly.
