100 over thickly settled country brought us to Washington on the western bank of the Brazos, & the present seat of Government. President Houston & his cabinet had been at Galveston & Houston for some time, but we daily expected to return for the forthcoming Congress. X
The Brazos river was very high, which obliged us to go up the Navasota river a couple of miles. The rich lower lands between the Brazos & Navasota are overflowed, & the Brazos bottom in many places covered with water for a distance of five miles inland. Roads very fatigueing for our horses being over muddy prairie country, & unfortunately lost our track this evening again - put up for the night at an unfinished log hut in a pine wood as yet not 'sealed' or boarded inside & no fireplace fixed. The inmates A young man, his wife & child had only moved in the day before, & although every thing was in confusion, they did all they could to accomodate us.
11th During the night a very cold Norther came on. Morning fine but cool. Five miles through the pine woods & sandy soil brought us to Mr G - about 16 miles or half way to Montgomery
