In referring to the year 1812 when one Bernardo was the revolutionary chief in command the Royalist troops were defeated with great loss at Rosillo an far from Goliad. Bernardo in one account is said to have had seventeen royalist officers his prisoners killed - Six more of the prisoners who were known as the "Six governors" he ordered to have their throats cut! - This sanguinary order was intrusted to Juan Vasquez who executed it to the letter.
Yesterday this same Juan Vasquez, who since the period of the Mexican revolution has led the life of a brigand, was met by a person some twenty miles down the San Antonio river.

Vasquez. Is is the road to San Antonio? Traveller. I know you. Why do you ask such a question. Vasquez. Do you take me for a thief? Traveller. Why you have been a thief & a murderer all your lifetime. Vasquez. Draw & defend yourself.

Vasquez draws a pistol - at this moment a Mr. F. came up & seeing Vasquez about firing at his opponent, levelled his rifle, but ? the brigand. Mr. F. & the other after some time made Vasquez prisoner, & in marching him to San Antonio, Mr. F. saw a deer, he dismounted to shoot it. Quick as lightning Vasquez "broke" and ultimately escaped.
