 The next day after the affair with Dawson was fought, [crossed out: commenced] the battle of the Salado under Caldwell; his brave band had pretty good cover on the Eastern bank of the river, each man took to his tree.   General Woll & the Mexicans were on a height in front of them.  Major H - I believe brought up the fight. Then the  enemy's infantry came up to within thirty or forty yards of the Texans, let fly vollies of Musketry - which provided no fatal effect; but each rifle shot brought its man down. Now was the time for the Mexicans to charge, but they did not, they were panic struck
