13 12 General La Mar, in a day or two; & this gave me an opportunity of looking about the country.

 Bluffs now appear on either side of the river at intervals covered with timbers & having springs & sloping down towards the open lands or small prairies (See Survey of Rio Colorado)  Most eligible spots for locations x  [Crossed out:  Ten or 12 miles up Buckner's creek is a stalactite cave of considerable extent.]
 In this vicinity, reside, at present many of the families of those who have removed from San Antonio, after their  Fathers' & relatives were made prisoners & were kept in chains in Mexico; likewise the widows & orphans of those who fell with Dawson at the "Mott" near the battle of the Salado was fought between Caldwell and General Woll.

19th - For some days past La Grange has been in bustle & activity, preparing a public dinner or Barbacue in honor of General Lamar, he is in the opposition & consequently sympathizes with the Western people. Beeves, Pigs, Venison, & Poultry have been slaughtered, in numbers & early this morning commenced the roasting & cooking of the victims;
