2 Houston has been taken from it, by the establishment of commercial trades on Trinity river, and the navigation of the Brazos by a Steamer, yet there are cotton planters and farmers enough in its vicinity & even out of it who will bring their cotton and other produce to Houston. Cash is very scarce, barter is nearly the only medium of trade. 10th. Left for Columbus on the River Colorado. Some 18 miles of low prairie, with the timber of Buffalo bayou on the right; forded the bayou (creek) During & after heavy rain these creeks are not fordable & in some parts of the low country what with the water in the bottoms Swamps & creeks the roads are rendered impassable for weeks. Buffalo bayou from here takes a S.W. course a considerable distance, with timbers on either side. Continuing my journey onwards over prairie
