52 Galveston at times as an awkward port to get in & out of. Small Steam "Tug" most effectually remove this difficulty; ? the 'Neptune' & "New York. Steams answer they end when either coming or going out of harbour. 13th Morning close & sultry, five flashes of lightning & deep booming thunder. Thick dark cloudy hanging about & occasional showers commenced which cooled the air immediately. This last showery weather has brought forward all sorts of vegetables and although the farmer has been abruptly taken away from his Agricultural labours to shoulder his rifle, kind nature is giving us a helping hand -

 11. AM A Violent Storm came on, blowing from N but varying to NNE.  The thick black clouds dissipated when it rained in tomcats; sheet & forked lightning of the most vivid description.   this is what may be called

 12 PM   It is now blowing a hurricane - 1 PM  Most furious with occasional hail.   At 2 PM. commenced subsiding.  Much damage done to the shipping, houses & gardens.  The Port
